As hot of the press - we are more than delighted to be site of the week at the site guide - the definitive guide to over 1500 fashion, lifestyle, beauty and gift stores online. Created and updated by Patricia Davidson, author of the superb ‘Shopaholics guides to the Web’ series of books, this site has been described as the web’s best shopping directory by Glamour.com.

Here is Patricia’s review in full

If you haven’t come across this website yet you need to take a look now, particularly as they’re the only online retailer in the UK offering cult US brand Smashbox online, alongside Philosophy, Bare Escentuals and other brands you may not have heard of. The site is certainly not the most sophisticated to look at although it’s very easy to navigate, and having bought from them more than once myself I can tell you that the service is excellent. Buy from them.

Well, we are so sorry to say that the hoped for resolution to the postal dispute did not come about and as a result further strike action is now underway.

The attached is taken from the Press Association website and I also attach the link to the Royal Mail website.

Postal workers across the UK walked out on strike at noon, crippling mail deliveries until next week in an escalation of a bitter dispute over pay, jobs and pensions.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) mounted picket lines outside mail centres at the start of a 48-hour walkout, which will be followed by another two-day stoppage from 3am on Monday.

Firms were warned that the strikes mean there will be no deliveries until next Thursday, and it is estimated that the row will cost industry millions of pounds.

The strike went ahead as planned despite last-ditch talks between the union and Royal Mail aimed at resolving the long-running dispute. The two sides met at TUC headquarters in London, but there was little sign of a breakthrough as the postal workers began their action.

The Government refused to become involved in the dispute, making it clear it should be resolved by the union and the management.

A spokesman for the Department for Business said: “The Government has been encouraging and will continue to encourage the parties involved to pursue and find a solution through talks.

“No one will benefit from strike action. Strike action can only damage Royal Mail’s business and the postal services market as a whole. The dispute is for the Royal Mail management and the unions to resolve.

“Royal Mail needs to modernise to compete in a liberalised postal services market. Management and unions must work together to achieve this and to meet the challenges of a liberalised market.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We will do all we can to mitigate the impact of the strike action but we would ask our customers to avoid posting mail during the strikes and if they do so, then to post any mail at Post Office branches, which will all be open for business as usual.

“Royal Mail has consistently sought a resolution to this dispute and we have been in talks with the CWU since last March. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience that CWU strike action causes.”

Just Beauty Direct therefore cannot guarantee any delivery of post will be effected before the end of next week and we really do apologise for the inconvenience this will undoubtedly cause you. Should you need your items urgently, please get in touch with us and we will do our utmost to assist.

Just had a quick question to ask you about the Guru Softlights! I’ve seen pics of it and it looks quite dark, does it go on quite sheer or is it quite bright?

<center .

Answer from Jayne

Guru isn’t dark at all - but it is deeper than Capture. For me, I can wear it swirled together as an all over face colour, but only if apply it lightly - otherwise I look as though I have caught the sun.

As a fusion blush, if I just apply it swirled to my cheeks, it is perfect - a lovely warm pink (whereas I would say the capture was cool) and with this, to get a colour, you don’t have to apply as much as you do with capture, which means that you get less shimmer, and I think, as a result, you get a more natural blush.

You can really see the difference in the individual colours too - on some of the fusions, whilst the individual colours are pretty, they are all similar. Guru has more definition - the warm bronze on the end has more pigment in it (and could definitely be worn on the eyes) the gold at the other end would also work as an eye base or highlighter. The rather dark looking berry pink in the middle is a beautiful diluted Ribena colour (I know I will never win prizes for descriptions but that is it exactly - but it sheer and non shimmery - so very flattering). The two colours either side - pale coral and pale lilac are both classic fusion colours - very soft shimmer.

We get asked a lot of questions - as you can imagine. It is often difficult to imagine what something looks like / feels like / how sheer or shimmery / will it suit fair /light / medium / deep skintones when you don’t have physical access to it. So I thought it might be helpful to put some of the questions and our answers on the blog.
That way, if you have the product, or have seen it used, you might be able to add to what we have said. We know we are not foolproof and at the end of the day, it is still opinion, but you never know, like the reviews, it could well assist someone as to whether it is something that might be worth trying or not!

So the most recent will will post on here - feel free to comment!

Ok…I am bad :((

This should have been announced at the beginning of September, not the end. We are now looking at Septembers ROTM. But in mitigation, we have had computer changes / glitches / fixes / updates, plus a major stocktake and refit (still ongoing) not to mention a wee holiday - so please forgive the delay. It does mean of course, that you get two chances in quick succession to win a tenner. But only if you wrote a review!

And the winner for August is Marion K!

Marion has been an effusive supporter of Smashbox since the shop opened and has written many honest and ‘hands on’ reviews of the products she has purchased. The one that caught my eye though, was her review of the Softlights Fusion Celebrity and Brush. Marion says

Bought this exactly for what it’s for; to take away on holiday or for in my handbag. But it’s going to see more use than that! The colour is so ‘me’ it’s unbelievable.
I must have had one of my ‘Mystic Maz’ moments (lol), because I popped in another one with my order (without the travel brush). Very pleased I did, because this is going to be a favourite. The brush is fab and soft as a feather. Am a happy, and now also glamorous, bunny !!!

Many congratulations Marion - and hope you have many more Mystic Maz moments!
A £10 JBD voucher will appear in your inbox very soon!

So continued poor weather, plus postal strikes made July another interesting (for that read difficult) month. It certainly didn’t dissuade all you lovely buyers though - we had 367 new customers register with us in July, making it the busiest month since JBD started.
Thank you to all who have registered with us - you will receive details of our latest products (we have so many to list) and we thank all of you for your continued support and custom.

Now then - July’s review of the month - hard to choose - but eventually we went for Claire Olson’s review of the Smashbox Softlights Palette in AGlow. Some of you may remember this was actually in the Smashbox TSV in June 2007. Such was its popularity, it is now a permanent item on QVC. It received remarkable reviews on ST.com - most thought it was a sensational face brightener - although others were disappointed in the lack of ‘colour’ it gave. What was amazing was that after people went back and tried it again they fell in love with the soft healthy gleam it gives to the skin and most of us cannot live without it these days.

Claire’s review, along with others (both of whom, co-incidentally are previous review winners), really hit the nail on the head as to why I like it so much.

Claire said

I love this product - can’t rave on about it enough! I don’t know how it does it, but there is definitely a noticeable difference when I apply this powder over my make-up. It sort of diffuses everything so I look all ‘a-glow’, smooth and finished. It’s fantastic, more luminous than shimmery and I wouldn’t be without it now!!

Many congratulations Claire - a £10 JBD voucher is on its way to you. And Aglow is available on its own, as part of a Softlights threesome (with Sunset and Matrix) or as part of the US TSV set.

Royal Mail are currently on strike/industrial action. Unlike previous action this seems to have been more carefully planned to cause the maximum possible disruption to mail than before. Different departments of Royal Mail are striking on different days and/or in different areas. The effect of this is cumulative and is causing major backlogs of post across the United Kingdom. In particular the people most affected are business mailers with accounts with Royal Mail such as ourselves and other mail order outlets.

The backlogged mail is estimated at around 8 million items and growing at 1 million a day. Consequently mail is taking a lot longer to get through to people and to get out of the country, and also via Heathrow, which is where 90% of international mail leaves this country. Particularly hard hit areas within the UK are Wolverhampton, London, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Uxbridge, Hull and Slough. Wolverhampton alone has a backlog of over 1 million items, which is understandable when you appreciate that Staffordshire is home to a very large quantity of mail order companies and fulfillment houses.

In theory the backlogged mail should be getting processed in an “oldest first” rota, but in reality we have been told this is not happening. What is occurring is that when mail is being sorted, the private postings (from postboxes and Post Offices) are getting done first, simply because there’s “less of it” and being collected daily from the boxes etc it tends to be smaller sacks, i.e. the “easy option”. Therefore we have found that items posted more recently are arriving faster than items posted earlier last week and last weekend. I know this causes worry as if more recent orders arrive, customers automatically assume that older parcels are lost.

Some areas are particularly badly affected also as post is not being collected from some businesses AT ALL. So far we have missed one business collection, but have posted out today (Saturday) to make up for this.

Please therefore accept our apologies for the delay to your delivery. You will need to allow a reasonable amount of time for deliveries to arrive during this difficult time, and accept our apologies for Royal Mail’s actions which are beyond our control.

Thank you for your continued patience - please do not hesitate to contact us if you require further information.

Another month gone by - and what a month - no sheer soft summer sunshine and sandals for us! We have all been deluged with hard, cold rain - some with disasterous results - rivers are flooded and villages and towns have been devastated. Combine that with the terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow *Jackie - I know what you are thinking …… and sometimes we never know how much we need to count our blessings for (Jackie’s daughter couldn’t get a flight from Glasgow yesterday as they were all full up due to it being the first day of the Scottish school summer holidays - and no, I don’t think the timing of the attack was coincidental with that fact)

Actually - that thought makes me think of the film Sliding Doors, you know, the one with Gwyneth Paltrow where the film splits into two paths/ future scenarios, depending on whether she catches a particular tube train. I love that film - it shows to go that whatever conscious or subconscious choices or actions we take in life there is a consequence. And I suppose when one regrets ones choices in life (as I think we all do from time to time) what we think of is only the positive aspects of the ‘what might have been’ - you never think about the negatives.

Anyway, enough of my musings on ‘the world according to a Smashbox addict…..’

Much more pleasant - *the fanfare rolls* ……. the June 2007 reviewer of the month is Christina Carlson from Denmark. All of Christina’s reviews have been clear and thoughtful opinions of what she has purchased - but her delight on discovering Smashbox eyeliner was clearly apparent. See here for the full review of the Beauty Bargain Scene Marker Eyeliner Trio.
Christina says

I’M IN LOVE!!! This is fantastic! I have never used eyeliner, I always thought it looked kind of strange on me. But this has changed now. The texture of this small palette is so smooth and silky, it just glides on like a dream and the colours look very natural and pretty. I am particularly fond of the dark brown colour, it makes my eyes look fantastic, almost mysterious and sexy. I am really impressed! It will stay on forever if you powder your eyelids lightly before you apply it. I’m so impressed by this, that my next buy will be the eyeliner palette in Proof.

I couldn’t agree more about Smashbox eyeliner - I personally love the lighter colours - Putty and Image are my favourites - although Lava comes a close second. And I also love the palettes - so much choice and they last for AGES.

Look out for a great little ‘try me’ eyeliner palette coming soon - called Composition, it is identical to the superb little Brow Tech palette except of course, it has four little pots of eyeliner in classic colours, rather than the brow tech colours and wax.

Anyway - congratulations to Christina - and please keep those reviews coming - we now have over 140 reviews - all from our customers - and remember, you don’t have to have purchased from us do a review of a product you have an opinion about - if there is something you love (or hate) tell us why - and you never know - a £10 voucher could be winging its way to you next month!
